Protecting our Natural Resources

Protecting our Natural Resources is first and foremost. For us, that means our Forests. Our Timber Supplier is certified by the CSA, Canadian Standards Association for Forest Management; FCS Forest Stewardship Council; Follows the FSC Chain of Custody protocols; SFI Sustainable Forest Initiative Certified. They harvest on certified lands 99.5%. To maintain Sustainability they are committed to planting as well. They plant over 70 million seedlings a year.

Logangate Timber Homes is a Panelized Post & Beam home mfg. Panelized simply means we stick build the walls and gable walls in our factory. This system build concept allows for us to build walls with unmatched squareness which translates into a tighter home. Panelizing walls also reduces waste in our plant and virtually eliminates waste on the job site.

Insulating Your Building Envelope


Thermal Envelope performance is probably one of the most critical elements in green building. Properly insulated home is important but if not done correctly can severely reduce the efficiency of your envelop. Case in point below left is a picture of common practice that has poor results.


This is called Thermal Bridging:

Thermal bridging occurs when a more conductive (or poorly insulating) material allows an easy pathway for heat flow across a thermal barrier. The most common form is seen in wall studs and roof trusses.


Think of a thermal bridge as a traditional bridge. This bridge is providing heat with a way to travel in and out of your home. When you see snow on roofs in the winter, and they begin melting along what appears like a grid, that’s a great example of thermal bridging.Poli-iso Insulation board The wood studs allow heat to flow through the wall assembly at a rate that is 3 times faster than the heat flow through the surrounding insulation. A 2×4 stud has an R value of 1.2 per inch, therefore R-4.2 in total. So even if you use R-15 fiberglass insulation between studs, the wall system will have an effective R value 10 to 12 depending on the framing. Not the result you thought you would get.

To combat this effect, Logangate installs a ½” Poli-iso Insulation board that is foil faced. We install it under the sheathing over the studs. We have been utilizing this technique for over 25 years and the building codes will be catching up to us soon and require it in the near future. This addition virtually eliminates thermal bridging.

Our Roof Panel System also eliminates any thermal bridging. Our structural roof system allows us to screw foam panels directly into the Tongue and Groove material. Therefore there is no structural wood in our roof panels just the EPS or NEOPOR Foam.

Our True System R value options for the roof are R-33, R-40 or R-48

Windows


Windows no matter what manufacturer you go with, the windows will be the coldest part of your walls. Simply more windows the less efficient your home will be. We try to balance that responsibility with also highlighting outstanding viewpoints from your homesite. First, as a minimum utilize Energy Star Certified windows. energy star rating

In addition, we can minimize heat loss or gain by customizing the glass to meet your environment. Passive Solar design allows us to customize the glass on certain sides of the home. As an example, install glass with very high SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) numbers on the North side of your home to allow solar heat to come through in the winter months and conversely utilize low SHGC numbers in the glass facing south and southwest to reduce the heat gain in the summer. For colder climates make sure your windows have a U-Value (insulating value) of .28 or less, lower the number the better.
